Homework Assignment #1 | Due 10.1.10

THE READING:
The Terra Fluxus introduction states that there is a rise in environmentalism and global ecological awareness and that architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and planning are moving toward a shared practice—landscape urbanism. Engineers and environmentalists understand landscape urbanism as landscape vs. urbanism but landscape urbanism actually strives to bridge all practices together to create a space that promotes "a diverse network of interaction" in the present while allowing for continuous evolution—terra fluxus. There are four themes for the practice of landscape urbanism: processes over time (how things work in space and time), the staging of surfaces (the field of action), the operational or working method (the reconsideration of traditional conceptual, representational and operative techniques), and the imaginary (the extension of new relationships and sets of possibilities). Landscape urbanism is necessary for creating practical and enjoyable environments that will last over time.

THE RESEARCH:
The research I've done so far is on the general stuff: where are the watersheds and what water projects are going on in San Francisco? I've never even heard the word watersheds until I took this class, nor do I know anything about them. I do consider myself environmentally conscious but not to this extent, so I need to begin my research from the ground up. I find it interesting to look over the projects that have been going on and have yet to be completed/approved. It makes me realize how much hard work goes into things like this unnoticed. But it should be noticed! I understand the social relevance of this class now. However, I am still struggling to understand the design context... but I'm sure it will reveal itself later in the semester.
